From Moodle™ to Open LMS: The benefits of migrating to another open source eLearning provider.

Artículos, Open LMS

With virtual education, teachers expect their students to obtain similar or better learning than with the traditional model, since virtuality offers the possibility of expanding the way of instructing, using the benefits of applying the educational elements that this model brings: videos, interactivity, infographics, virtual forums, among others. In addition to obtaining a technological platform that responds to the needs and the training process of the students.
Taking into account the vision of the teachers regarding virtual education, eLearn Magazine had the opportunity to exchange knowledge about the learning experience online with Sara Lorenzo, director of academic coordination and eLearning director at EUDE business School, an expert in philology and eLearning with more than 15 years of experience in virtual training. Y Pedro Pérez, Deputy Director for Infrastructure Knowledge Management Issues at Comillas Pontifical University, with a degree in Physics and Telecommunications Engineering and a Master's degree in Business Administration.
Both institutions went through a migration process of their digital environments from Moodle™ to Open LMS, thanks to Pentec (official provider of Open LMS solutions in Spain) that has also accompanied the institution in its developments and customizations. Let's see:
The digital ecosystem of the two campuses
A digital ecosystem brings together various technologies and information elements responsible for managing or organizing the tasks of an educational institution or entity. Through this ecosystem, communication is improved and the teaching process is strengthened.
Regarding the digital ecosystem of EUDE Business School, the director of academic coordination and eLearning director, Sara Lorenzo, narrated her experience with the implementation of Open LMS with its on-site and virtual students, who thanks to this platform can access the contents of the master's degrees, the virtual library, seminars and events, language training and the campus via streaming. "The platform works as an ecosystem in which our students can find themselves in a single habitat for their training. At EUDE Business School we have been working with Open LMS for 5 years and since we started our alliance we have been evolving together in the use and scope of the platform to have a campus that is almost 100% adapted to the needs that we have as an educational institution and our students", said Lorenzo.said Lorenzo.
At the same time, he revealed that the main motivation for making the leap to Open LMS was the flexibility the platform offered them: "We needed a platform that would allow us to stop worrying about technical issues, we needed a robust and reliable system. We found in Open LMS a platform that we can trust, which has allowed us to focus our efforts on improving the experience of our students, which is our objective, and that made the decision to change platform easier".
On the other hand, Pedro Perez, informed that in this educational institution they started implementing the Open LMS platform four years ago in the classroom and online modality, which has allowed them to keep in continuous innovation thanks to the proper use of educational technology that remains at the forefront with the latest developments.
Of that university's digital ecosystem, Perez expressed: "The word that sums it up is "tranquility". We had a broad ecosystem but we needed resources at the system and development level to have the degree of reliability that the university required; that would allow us to use a platform 100% without problems of crashes, scalability and sizing".
Benefits to students of migrating to Open LMS
Virtual education has the ability to reduce costs, save time, provide flexibility in scheduling, interactivity, among other benefits that benefit students and teachers. But for this modality to be effective and generate an academic transformation, it is essential to have the ideal technological tools to carry out the teaching process.
Regarding the benefits offered by Open LMS, Sara Lorenzo highlighted: "The stability and the guarantee that everything is working, that allows us to work with peace of mind". She also pointed out that the university's main objective is to ensure that students are not worried, but that they can combine stability and flexibility when studying.
"We hope to continue working with the functionalities that will allow us to better respond to the most current needs of our students, such as continuing with live classes, HTML5 content, interactive videos, etc. The idea is that everything will continue to be available and work from any device, which is key for our students as they need flexibility to access at any time," said Lorenzo about the future impact they hope to have with the use of Open LMS.
He also emphasized that they have been able to make effective progress thanks to the technical support provided by the Open LMS team from the initial phase. "That accompaniment and providing new infrastructure has allowed us to go from having 2,000 students to almost 8,000. This is due to the fact that the platform adapts and is done in a logical way, being built from the ground up". Lorenzo pointed out.
Pedro Perez also mentioned that it has been beneficial to migrate from Moodle™ to Open LMS, because they have grown and integrated the virtual system to a face-to-face scenario. He also stated that Open LMS takes care of usability, because you can easily change a graphic theme, it adapts to mobile devices, it offers a great experience, and it is easy to use.It adapts to mobile devices, offers a great user experience, is attractive and incorporates functionalities that extend the other basic ones.
Another benefit of migrating from Moodle™ to Open LMS is the possibility of preserving and transferring existing information, since, according to Pérez, the platform managed to maintain the training data of the 12,000 students they had at the time. "We wanted the teachers to enter the new scenario with a new structure adapted to the new environment. We planned it and did an audit phase, we analyzed what code we had to develop, we made the developments and implemented new plugins and as soon as we had the integration consolidated we did the test and went into production, there was only an 8-hour drop."
      Advantages of using open source
Open source software is adapted to collaborative work, which is fundamental in virtual academic training. Thanks to open source, e-learning experts can make modifications that result in more enriching learning experiences.
"This feature is the success of our campus because it has allowed us to detect the needs of students and users, to adapt to our needs and to improve the user experience. Open LMS offers a satisfactory experience with open source and we have been adapting it to the students.". Lorenzo said about the implementation of Open LMS open source technology. And he revealed that the university's goal is to improve this experience to get students on the right track.
From his own experience, Perez spoke about the benefits they have received from using the Open LMS open source code: "It is the experience of a large community, the professionals who are working in the area of training; well that experience you acquire and when you start from an already consolidated advance and on that basis you can adapt it to your own needs. It doesn't depend on you doing everything but you benefit and you accommodate it. Transparency, open source is a code that does not reside in one person."

      Willingness to change

Management at larger companies, especially those with more than 10,000 employees, fear that, when implemented internally, it will be a challenge to get the optimal number of employees to use chatbots. Even in the case of customers, it is a concern if they are willing to interact through chatbots while leaving aside other alternative channels. In reality, chatbots are nothing more than a sophisticated form of communication that is heavily driven by technology. Chatbots are very intuitive and, when implemented effectively, have the power to engage the user better than any other medium. Successful companies are already reaping the benefits of conversational AI.

Knowing the target audience and channels

Sometimes, companies fail to understand their audience and the channels they want to use as a means of propagating their products or services. Understanding audience personas prevents companies from moving forward with conversational AI. Conversational chatbots AI-powered conversational chatbots can be used on websites, social media pages or any other messaging channel, keeping in mind that chatbot conversations vary from platform to platform. For example, website visitors may know more about your products than someone visiting your social networks for the first time.
